Japan Tsunami Relief Effort March 23 2011, 9:19pm via japanskiexperience.com

It is less than 2 weeks since the massive earthquake off the coast of Sendai and the subsequent tsunami that caused widespread destruction along the north east coast of Japan’s main island of Honshu. While these tragic events are no longer dominating news headlines around the world, thousands of people from the affected areas are still missing and many thousands more are suffering in harsh conditions as they slowly attempt to rebuild lives shattered by these disasters.

Last week two Australians based in Niseko loaded a van with supplies and donations and drove down to one of the badly affected areas. Here is a short film showing what they saw and the efforts they made:

If you wish to help and have not yet done so, you may wish to consider supporting the The Japan Society Tohoku Earthquake Relief Fund. The Japan Society will channel all donations received to the ongoing work of voluntary and community organisations (NPOs) working in the most affected prefectures. Once the emergency relief work of the Japanese government, the Japan Red Cross and other national and international relief agencies has finished, and the basic physical needs of the victims of the disaster have been met, there will be an immense amount of work to be done to rebuild lives and livelihoods. The Japan Society will work with representatives and support networks of local NPOs to ensure that funds are directed to appropriate organisations on the ground for maximum impact.
